Now that I’m back in the running game, I’ve signed up for a few races to close out 2015. I asked Raechel (my physical therapist) if I could run a half marathon in December. She said no. It’s really nice to have someone smarter than me to make these decisions.
I’m going to keep slowly building a base and hopefully run a longer race some time early next year.
Based on that plan, I signed up for a bunch of shorter races to close out 2015. Wanna talk about it? Wanna run them with me?

I spent most of Saturday horizontal on the couch nursing a cold. Sunday morning, amped on Mucinex, I took my bike (and Matthew) to Central Park to ride two loops of the park for the first time ever. The maximum I’d ever conquered in the park before is one loop.
It’s a strange activity for someone who spent most of the weekend trying to take it easy. But I’m training for something. What? Yup! I haven’t mentioned it here because I’m a little intimidated by it.
The NYC Half was last weekend which makes me feel like spring is officially within sight. Running season is here. I wrote about this when I wrote about the NYC Marathon and the East Hampton Half, but I love watching races. My eyes well up every time.

For me, it’s basically two things. First, the sense of community/friendship. When a runner grabs the hand of a friend and they pass the finish line holding hands, I think my heart might burst. When someone spots a familiar face cheering in the crowd? That’s right. A person stood around in the cold just waiting for you to run by so they could tell you how great you are and how proud they feel. What is better than that? No one stands next to my desk at work screaming WAY TO GO, HABER. And I imagine no one does it at yours either. Races are special.
I was in Washington last week and saw my old orthopedist. Ahh first loves! (I lived in DC for nearly 6 years before moving to New York.) I’ve become the sort of traveler who packs her MRI next to her travel toothbrush so I was ready to go when he had a last minute opening.

After my first race (the Broad Street 10 miler) I wound up with a hairline fracture. Without much fanfare, I found a doctor who took my insurance… and then quickly fell in love with him. He actually solved my ailment immediately! He prescribed orthotics and physical therapy and eventually my ankles were back in business. After all the rigmarole, this time around I was excited to return to someone who had proven he knows what’s up.
Running the NYC Marathon (or any marathon) was never on my radar.
Even as I got more excited about running and racing, the half marathon distance still felt (and feels) like a big enough goal.
So my obsession with the NYC marathon stems not from my own personal goal of crushing it, but because I love the place NYC turns into when the marathon comes to town. I love reading marathon training blogs. And I love watching the marathon and cheering on the runners.
