Since I recently did a big cleanse, healthy eating has been top of mind. A lot of this post’s favorites are food related. Here we go.
I’ve considered working with a nutritionist for a long time. Over the last few months, I’ve felt sluggish and had frequent headaches. I’ve been wondering if my diet might be the cause.
Because let’s be honest. I’ve picked up some undesirable eating habits lately, like mindlessly snacking at work and ending every meal in dessert. I typically make smart choices during meal time, but supplement my food intake with day-long candy and carb binges. So there was plenty of room for improvement.
Working with a nutritionist be can be expensive, and I wasn’t ready to make the commitment. I was ready to dip my toe in the water and impose a little structure on my free-wheeling ways.
My friend Tracey (Kale with a side of fries) is a nutritionist and every quarter she runs a “detox jam” aimed at resetting your food habits. This seemed like the perfect way to jump start 2017 and clean up my diet. The detox jam cost $200 and is a two-week commitment. I signed up and paid up.

Let’s talk about consultant life. Recently, I’ve been traveling a ton for work and even though I find it professionally fulfilling, I can’t deny that my workouts suffer for it.
I wrote a post two years ago with tips on how to incorporate fitness into your life while traveling, but traveling for work is not the same as traveling as a tourist. The challenges are totally different. You’re not free to explore. More likely, you’re attached to a laptop in a new city trying to multi-task across timezones.
I won’t claim to have perfected the art of the “work travel workout,” but I have learned from my mistakes, of which there are many, and created a list of ways you can stay on target while traveling.

I had jury duty for the first time ever this week. The Centre Street courts are deliciously close to Chinatown and a huge plate of noodles was a definite consideration as I headed downtown on Monday morning. But after sitting around all day, eating a heavy meal didn’t sound so good to me any more. Also, we had Chinese food for dinner the night before. (If you were to ask “Who cooks?” in our house the answer would be “Mee Noodle Shop.”)
I searched the internet to find a list of “healthy lunch options for jury duty” and got bupkis. There are tons of recommendations for lunch, but none are for the healthy eater. So I wanted to share with you where I ended up eating, and what your healthy choices are for lunch near Centre Street.

I recently asked my friend Jenny if she had ever tried a cleanse. She responded, “I once subsisted on only grapefruit, coffee and Parliament Lights, but I don’t think that’s what you’re looking for.” Fair, Jenny. Fair. Jenny’s “cleanse” is not a good example, but I love reading about strange exercises, fad diets and weird habits.
And I’ve had a lot to read recently! Maybe it’s residual New Year’s Resolution excitement, but there have a ton of trendy/weird health and fitness news out there. Instead of sending it in a mass email to my friends who I hope aren’t too tired of that sort of correspondence, I thought I’d share it here.
