On a Saturday afternoon in mid-March, I finished a terrible 3-mile run. It was one of many terrible recent runs.
I don’t have a sports agent. Speaking frankly, only one person would care if I quit running. I am married to him. So I called him. He answered from a chair lift in Beaver Creek. I got right to the point.
Me: Matt, I want you to be the first to know. I’m taking a break from running.
Matt: Does this mean you’re not running the Cherry Blossom Ten Miler?
Me: Correct. No more questions.
Matt: And you’re not running the Covered Bridges Half Marathon in June?
Me: Exactly right. This interview is over. It’s my turn to order at Muffins Cafe. Love you.
I hung up the phone and I didn’t run for a month. I still found myself in DC the weekend of the Cherry Blossom race since Matt was running and I love our yearly trip. I used to live in DC and coming back for a weekend is always a delight.
One of my closest friends, Tricia, lives in DC and is the chief of staff in a congressional office. Tricia had convinced her entire team to sign up for the race with her. Then she didn’t train for it. A natural born leader, she planned to run the race anyway. The day before the race, we had the following exchange:
After a week of skiing and running I wanted to make sure to rest before the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler. I try not to work out too much before a race and that makes this week’s recap a little light. Here is what I think about that:
Last week’s workouts:
Last weekend I ran the Cherry Blossom 10 miler for the second time.
I love this race since it’s largely flat and 10 miles is a great distance. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying it’s easy. I still have to train for something like this. (Wisdom: Train for all races!) Personally, I cannot *wing* a 10 mile race, but I could maybe wing a 4 mile one.
And about that training, it only went so so. I’ve been running slower than this time last year, I have no idea why. But it’s fine. I think these ups and downs are to be expected.
Anyway, we took the train down and got to DC at 2pm on Saturday. We dropped our stuff off at our hotel. I like to pick a hotel walking distance from the race start. Even if we end up taking a cab to the race (which we did) it’s nice to have the option to walk home.
oh hey guys
Hello there. I’m taking full advantage of the nice weather, my proximity to Central Park and that my ankle (knock on all of the wood) is still in good shape and I’ve signed up for a bunch of races.
Will you be running any of these? Any other ones I should add to my list?
Here is my spring/summer race list:
Hello! How is your week going? Last week for me was largely about taking it easy so I didn’t head to the Cherry Blossom 10 miler sore. Here’s what went down.
Monday: Didn’t work out.
Tuesday: Didn’t work out. (Cut me some slack, the week before was pretty intense.)
