Yesterday I ran on an AlterG for the third time. I didn’t feel any significant pain. An AlterG is a magical treadmill that allows you to run without the impact of your full body weight.
You step into leggings that zip into the treadmill and it calculates your weight. Here comes the Narnia part. You then decide what percent of your body weight you’d like to run with and it compensates/makes you feel lighter by blowing air up through the sealed container you’re in.
For an injured runner this is amazing. (Though update soon: I think I am pretty much not injured anymore!!) The first two times I used the AlterG I was on such a high. I could not believe I was running again. I was still pretty pumped yesterday but after 8 months of idolizing the act of running, I started to see it more clearly.
Things I forgot about running during my 8-month-long running FOMO
1. The first 5 minutes/1 mile are tough
2. I need Kanye not the Indigo Girls to pump me up during a run
3. Even an anti-gravity treadmill is still a treadmill
4. Being in running shape helps with running
A couple more runs on the AlterG and I’ll be allowed to do a short run outside. I can’t wait.
Have you ever come back to running from an injury? How’d it go?
